The weather sure has not been particularly friendly to our pansies and violas. Oh how they do not like 80 degree days. Since the weather has broke so late have you run out of time to plant your pansies? If so, we are available to help you with this. Give us a call today at 644-8144!!

Wow, I am so embarrassed about how long it has been since I posted on the blog. Thankfully, we now have internet at the nursery and I will be able to maintain it better. With the kids activities I have just have not had a lot of free time at night to get on the computer.

We have been so busy getting ready for this time of year. We are experiencing some growing pains as I can not seem to find enough time to update the blog because I am so busy with all the flowers. My five year old did snap some photos for me the other day. I thought I would share those with you. Also a few specials for my blog friends - 10% off full trays of annuals and vegetables and a free 6" geranium (Ivy not included) with every $25.00 you spend. April gardening tips

*Stay out of the garden if the soil is wet. We have clay soil which is already compacted. If you work this soil it will just make it worse. The plants can not survive without oxygen. Test the soil by squeezing a handful into a lump, then push your thumb into the lump. If it dents like modeling clay, it is to wet. If it crumbles, then it good to work with. Maybe incorporate some good soil into the clay BUT do not fill the hole with just good soil or the water can not drain away through the clay soil and the roots will rot. *(I had this tip at the bottom but with all the rain I decided to move it to the top)

After your spring flower bulbs have finished you should deadhead them BUT do not cut back the green foliage. These green leaves are what provides the bulb with its food for the next year.

It is a great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants (and we have some at the nursery). Fruits and berries do best when planted in full sun.

Perennial plants should be set out this month so they may get established before the hot weather comes in.

Get the flower beds ready for spring. Summer annuals will do much better if planted in well prepared beds. Yes, it is too early to plant but it is not to early to get those beds ready.

Prune your Forsythia after it has finished blooming.

Now is a good time to plant ground covers. If you have an area that is susceptible to erosion these work great. Also for areas of shade they provide low maintenance landscape instead of grass. Some examples are periwinkle, ajuga, and bugleweed.

If you have any house plants they should be repotted. Scrub an old pot before reusing, and repot in good potting soil. Wait one month to fertilize them!!

For my customers that I talked with about storing your fuchsias and geraniums over the winter, you may bring them out after all danger of frost has passed. Trim them back, fertilize them and re-pot if needed. Water them well. They will be huge in no time with the established root system they have.

Is it just me or has this winter seemed to last forever? We sure did have our share of snow this winter and my kids loved every bit of it. It is spring and tonight we are seeing temperatures in the low 30's. Although I know you are anxious to plant it really is not quiet time yet. We are aware that some bigger stores already have all the beautiful annuals sitting around but they have been shipped in from warmer climates like Georgia and Florida. Please remember that our average last frost date is April 17th. If you trust the Almanac (we do) it says the second half of April will be unusually cold too. So please keep in mind that whatever you buy early you may need to be able to bring it in and out of the house for it to last long enough for it to be safe to stay outside.

Tomorrow I hope to get some pictures posted of the greenhouse. We are very excited to have new guniea impatiens and ivy geraniums this year!

November Garden Tips

After chrysanthemums have stopped blooming, cut stems back close to the ground and dispose of stems and all dropped and dried leaves and branches. Mulching good will improve your chances of them returning next spring.

You still have a little time to plant your tulip bulbs!!

If you haven't already applied a fall or winter type of lawn fertilizer, now is the time to do it. This encourages good root development and helps improve the color of the lawn. Lime can also be applied, if needed. We can help you with this service if you need it.

Weeding in November prevents roots thickening and spreading over the winter months, so avoid the nuisance when the temperature warms up.

Mulching with either pine bark or pine needles is one of the best ways to protect perennial plants against cold temperatures. Mulching also can prevent the repeated freezing and thawing of soil that causes plants to "heave" out of the ground.

Remember to water in the winter months if we have any long dry spells. These can ruin shallow rooted plants. On the other side poor drainage can cause serious root rots.

Remove the old stems of peony and hollyhock disposing of them. This will reduce the carryover of the diseases during the winter and you will have less trouble next year.

November is a good time to have your soil tested, so you'll be all set to go next spring.

Bring out the bird feeders and stock them with bird seed for the birds. Remember to provide fresh water for them too.

Mums the word!!

I am sure you probably think that since I have not been on here since July. I thought when summer got here I would have free time but we had to turn right around and start the Chrysanthemums for this fall. Well to make up for that I am going to give the first 10 customers tomorrow an additional 10% off their order excluding annuals and landscaping since it will be the 10th day of the 10th month!! Next Friday we have an add running that will show we are having a sale for up to 50% off shrubs and trees. If you mention the blog I will give you the sale prices before then.

So if you want to have a beautiful landscape next year then fall is the time to plant. The cooler air temperatures reduce evaporation so they require less watering. The soil is still warm which will promote root growth. In fact the root growth will continue through the winter as long as the ground temperature remains above freezing. This will give you an established root system which will provide you with better spring blooms and vigorous new growth.

We have some beautiful Mums in all colors and sizes. We have several that are not your standard mums. They are just getting ready to bloom and I am anxiously awaiting it. I have not decided which one I like the best. You decide!

Tomato Tips - repost

Do you want to have the biggest and sweetest tomatoes on the block? Here are a few basics to help you achieve that. Bury the tomato plants deeper than they were when you bought them, you can bury them all the way up to the top leaves. Your tomatoes will develop roots all along their stems. You can dig a really deep hole or simply dig a shallow furrow and lay the plant sideways. It will straighten up as it grows toward the sun. Just remember not to drive your stake or cage into the stem.

Pinch and remove suckers that develop in the V joint of two branches. They won’t bear fruit and the energy from these will now go to the rest of the plant. Do not over prune the plant. You can thin some leaves to allow the sun to reach the ripening fruit, but the leaves are photosynthesizing and creating the sugars that give flavor to your tomatoes.

Once the tomato plants is about 3 feet tall would be a good time to remove the leaves from the bottom foot of stem. This will help prevent fungus problems.

Have you been to the local big box store and saw their annuals? We dare you to come check ours out. Be sure that you have looked good at the size of the six packs at these stores, especially how small the actual cell is. We use jumbo six packs for our plants to develop good roots not get root bound so that they start to bloom early. We can also tell you that we do not use insecticides that is common practice for nurseries. We released approximately 9,000 lady bugs to help prevent insects so feel safe when you are growing our tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, squash and zucchini. Also lets not forget our herbs. We also have not used any plant growth regulators (hormones) on any of our plants. Personally we do not know all the side effects of these things and our children are in the greenhouse all the time. If we do not feel it is safe for our family we are not going to expose you to it. We look forward to seeing you!

If so you really need to come visit us. We have quite a variety because there were so many different tomatoes and peppers I was wanting to try. Our six packs are $1.50. In tomatoes we have - Better Boy, Beefmaster, Big Beef, Brandywine, Celebrity, Early Girl and German Johnson. In peppers we have - Bell Captain, Bell Boy, Sweet Banana, Pimento Elite, Long Slim Red Cayenne and Jalapeno. We have pickling and Burpee hybrid cucumbers. We have straight neck and crook neck squash and zucchini. Also we have Early Jersey and Late Dutch cabbage that several of you have already planted. This year we have also got several herbs to choose from. We have a 5 in 1 apple tree that looks really interesting with the pink and white blooms on one tree. Freeze Warning

It is still too early to plant according to our average last frost date but I have to admit I have been guilty of planting early too. This week it is not even frost we are worried about as it is going to get very close to freezing on Monday night and below freezing on Tuesday night. If you have already taken a chance and done some planting try to cover it up to keep it from freezing. We will be keeping an eye on the weather for next week as the weather changes so much during this time of the year. We are taking care of all the vegetables and annuals that we have waiting for you. We have a good variety of tomatoes and peppers to offer you. We also have cucumbers and our squash and zucchini should be ready really soon. We look forward to seeing you!!

It is finally here and it is not long until we can start our planting of tender annuals. We are busy working in the greenhouse getting everything ready for you. Our average last frost date for our zone falls between April 1st and April 30th so I guess that is why I have heard so many refer to it as around April 15th. I tried really hard to find an exact date but even the USDA shows us as between April 1st and April 30th. If you are like me you are really looking forward to planting this spring so I thought I would share some pictures from our greenhouse. I know you can not tell exactly what things are but it gives you an idea that we are ready for you come spring!

Pansy pics

This AM I stopped to take a few pictures of the pansies. Sorry they are not the best because of all the rain we have had and also I stopped before the dew had time to dry this morning. Also I tried mainly to take pictures of the different pansies but we still have the standards.
You can click the picture to see a larger view! Pansies are $13.20 a flat which is $2.20 a six pack. I am taking really good care of them by deadheading each day so that they develop more root growth.

The one on the left is light purple violas and the one on the right is clear blue pansies. My camera did not do the pansies justice. Do not forget Violas in your plantings because they will bloom in colder weather than the pansies.

The orange are really pretty and I think they would be great with the Black ones for Halloween.

We got in some more pansies today. I am really excited about the black ones and I think I will make me a pot with orange and black ones for Halloween. We also got in the ornamental kale and cabbage. These are a great access to any garden as they add year-round color in the winter months. These plants are very showy, and come in a variety of colors, ranging from white to pinks, purples or reds. Also do not forget fall is the best time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees. We got in some more perennials, shrubs and trees this week. Tomorrow I will take some pictures to post next week. When the rain lets up we hope to see you!!

Dwarf Burning Bush special

This plant stays smaller than the species. This is still not a small plant but is better adapted for residential landscapes than the species. The fall color is second to none among any plant used in the US. Plants appear to survive dry periods well but will enjoy a mulched layer like other shrubs and trees will. We got our pansies in this week. Also we got in some more Encore Azaleas, Purple Diamond Loropetalum and Purple Pixie Loropetalum. Purple Pixie is a new dwarf, spreading loropetalum, it boasts some of the most intense purple foliage color available on the market. Growing to an average size of 1-2 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide, new flushes start upward and then gently cascade downward, creating a beautiful purple carpet effect. Remember the first day of fall is Monday so be sure to get a jump on your fall plantings.

With flower bulbs size matters. That's because large bulbs produce more or larger flowers than small bulbs. We went with a supplier that only delivers 12cm circumference tulip bulbs or larger that we have used in the past. There are some tulips that are willing (though not guaranteed) to put on a good display for more than one year and all the varieties we ordered have strong perennial tendencies. The daffodil bulbs we choose are 16cm circumference daffodil bulbs or larger. Larger bulbs simply produce superior plants with more impressive flowers. The larger bulb appears to be expensive, but it's actually more economical than a small bulb if you count the flowers you get. And isn't the purpose of planting bulbs to enjoy a great spring display with lots of flowers?

Do you want to have a beautiful landscape next year? If so, then fall is the time to plant. The cooler air temperatures reduce evaporation so they require less watering. The soil is still warm which will promote root growth. In fact the root growth will continue through the winter as long as the ground temperature remains above freezing. This will give you an established root system which will provide you with better spring blooms and vigorous new growth.

Most people buy their perennials during the spring to plant them but actually the best time to plant is in the fall. In fact we have several perennials that we are going to pot up to a bigger size to sale next year. Now is the time to purchase and plant these so that you will have that bigger perennial in your garden. The same goes for our shrubbery and trees.

August Garden tips

Are you irises not perfoming so great, it could be that they need to be divided and now is the time for that.
Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to begin to control cool season weeds. (Mike is a licensed applicator)
Lightly fertilize your knock out roses and fall blooming roses to help them prepare for this fall.
Prune deciduous shrubs again near the beginning of the month, if needed.
Hollies should be mulched and watered well during the hot weather to prevent them from losing their berries before maturing.
Watch for aphids, spider mites, thrips and white flies as they are at their worst during hot, humid weather. Spray accordingly.
Try making your own insecticidal soap with a recipe of one gallon water, 2 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp dish detergent, and 2 tsp white vinegar. Spray the pest treatment under the leaves of your plants where the white fly eggs, scale and adults reside. This can be time consuming as the bugs will die only when they come in direct contact with the spray. Each leaf needs to be sprayed. You must be diligent and apply the spray every 3 to 5 days to maintain control over the white files. Use soaps when plants are not drought-stressed and when temperatures are under 80°F to prevent possible damage to plants. Test the insecticidal soap first on your plants to make sure it will not burn the leaves. Spray the soap on a few leaves and wait two days to see if there is any burning. If burning occurs, try diluting the spray with more water and test again.

Endless Summer Hydrangea

Endless Summer is a mophead hydrangea that can bloom on both old and new wood. The repeat blooms of Endless Summer The Original truly offer gardeners an endless summer of incredible color. This hardy plant is perfect for everything from foundation planting to container gardening. They even make an ideal floral arrangement or table setting as cut flowers. Speaking of color – that's also one of the remarkable aspects of this plant. You can alter the color from pink to blue.

How to change the color

Endless Summer The Original has the unique ability to produce spectacular pink or blue blooms depending on the pH makeup of your soil. An alkaline soil produces pink flowers, while an acid soil produces blue flowers (you can buy a soil pH testing kit to test your soil). It is possible to manipulate the color of hydrangeas, but one word of caution: many people have killed their plants by applying too much aluminum sulfate. More is not better.

To encourage flowering, it is recommend for you to use a fertilizer low in nitrogen and with a phosphorus content over 30. An N-P-K ratio of 10-40-10 is ideal (note: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in fertilizers).

Change to Pink
To change from blue to pink you need to change from an acid soil to an alkaline one. To help raise your pH you can use dolomitic lime several times a year. You will have to retest your soil and aim for a pH of about 6.0 to 6.2, if it goes above 6.4, your hydrangea may experience an iron deficiency. Use fertilizers with high levels of phosphorus such as 10-40-10. Phosphorus helps to prevent aluminum from being taken up in the plant's system. Consider growing your hydrangea in a large pot where it would be easier to control the pH.

Change to Blue
Lowering the pH of your soil to a pH level of about 5.2-5.5 will produce blue flowers. Using a soil acidifier will lower your soil's pH for beautiful blue blooms. Follow directions carefully on the acidifier product you purchase. Thoroughly water the plant before adding any acidifier. Adding large amounts of organic matter, such as peat moss and composted leaves, will acidify the soil as it breaks down. Remember to check the pH of your water as well as your soil. If you are trying to turn your flowers blue and you have hard water, it will be difficult to achieve. Also remember that concrete foundations and walkways tend to leach lime, raising the pH in that area.

Deadheading done right

Annuals and perennials that repeat bloom will often do so only if the old, dying flowers are removed. If they remain on the plant, they will go to seed and stop producing flowers. Several flowers that bloom only once per season benefit from deadheading, because the plant puts its energy into strengthening itself instead of producing seed. Some exceptions to this rule are plants like Astilbe or ornamental grasses, that bloom only once, but continue to look attractive with their drying seed heads. Most annuals and many perennials will continue to bloom throughout the growing season if deadheaded. Black eyed susan, Butterfly bush, Dianthus and Purple coneflower are good examples of perennials that benefit from deadheading.

The pictures above show some that were left on a plant. The one the left has already dried, broke open and started to spread the seed. On the right it is in the process of going to seed. These are from petunias.

This petunia needs to be deadheaded. Below shows the correct way to do it.

Make sure to pinch behind the bloom...do not just pull the bloom off or it will go to seed.

This is an example of what happens when they are left to go to seed. The plant starts to get leggy and you just have a bunch of pods and very few blooms. Be sure to pinch the entire bloom off do not just pull the dead blooms off because it will not have any benefits. If you take the time to do this often it does not take that long and actually is my therapeutic time. Do not waste the money you spent on your flowers, deadhead today to enjoy them the whole growing season.

Knock out roses

These have been among the most popular in all the items we sale. We have the single bloom, double bloom and tree form. I thought I would pass along a few tips to help yours reach their full potential. Deadheading will encourage new growth.

Regular deadheading will keep the Knock Out rose bush blooming until late fall
Be sure not to pile the mulch against the stems of the roses
Apply a fertilizer developed for rose bushes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on fertilizing frequency. There are some good ones that insecticides and fungicides in the rose food
Make sure that the Knock Out rose bush is in a sunny location with well-drained soil
Water the Knock Out rose bush at the bottom. Reducing the shrub's exposure to overhead watering prevents leaf spot and disease. Increase the watering frequency during dry weather

Remember how important it is to next year's flowers to not cut the foliage off of your spring bulbs. Always allow them to die back to the ground naturally!
To keep the new blooms coming on plants be sure to deadhead. It is actually quite therapeutic...try it today!
We still have annuals that you can use to make some planters to liven up those dull areas around the house.
Remember that even drought and heat tolerant plants need special attention paid to them when they are used in containers and/or hanging baskets. Check them frequently!

Prayer requests

My Papa has been on a ventilator for 18 days now and they have taken 50 pounds of fluid off of him and they see no improvement. My Dad and his family have the hard decision of deciding when to take him off of the ventilator in the next few days. Please pray for the Lord's presence to be with them during this time.

Also Mike's Granny continues to battle her cancer and is in pain daily. Please pray for the Lord to ease her pain.

Double knockouts are finally here!

Ok, I switched from the old blogger and can not figure out (do not have time) to move them.

The double knock out roses finally came in and I am sure they will not be here long.

Sorry to say we have already sold all but one of the pink carpet roses and we have three white carpet roses left.

We got in six more of the Red Cascade Roses and they look just as good as the other ones we sold out of.

The variegated Weigela is a nice variation to any garden.

The Knockout tree roses are blooming again and they smell wonderful!

There are two new varieties of butterfly bush that have came in which are 'Asian Moon' and 'Rasberry Eyes'

We received the purple rhododendron that so many of you had asked about and we still have some of the lavender and rose colored ones.

My day off from the Lord

Well today it is raining here in Stokesdale and that gives me a much needed break to get some inside stuff done. Yesterday it was hot while we were watering here at the nursery and I believe the temperatures are supposed to be high again tomorrow.
Our hanging baskets are really taking off and with prices beginning at $6.00 you just can not find a better deal. We still have a few double impatients that are just beautiful and the double wave petunias are beautiful no matter how you use them. There are only two fuchsia baskets left and we may get some more in next week.

Our first day

Wow, we had a great first day especially considering that we had not advertised, had no sign and we are not on a main road. We had several people who came because someone else who had visited us had called them and told them about us. Below are some great pics the kids took - enjoy!
